Explore Munich

A fun-loving and festive city, Munich is full of music and magical moments that will make your journey unforgettable. Located in southern Germany, this city is also the gateway to the Bavarian Alps and the historic city of Nuremberg. Raise a stein at the Hofbräuhaus, one of Munich’s oldest breweries, which was founded in 1589. Watch the charming Glockenspiel on the neo-Gothic New Town Hall in Marienplatz that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century. Visit a few of the more than 80 world-renowned museums within the city limits. Or, head out of town for a day trip to places like the village of Oberammergau — famous for its Passion Play.

Munich Activities

Celebrations are at the center of Munich nightlife. Biergartens (beer gardens) are a raucous time, and some bars and nightclubs are open until 6:00 am. Jazz is very trendy, and the city is full of theaters and variety-show venues. Munich is probably best known for its festivals. The biggest of all, Oktoberfest, runs annually from late September to early October. This good-time festival attracts millions, and features traditional German bands, numerous beer tents and gardens, and more beer than you can dream of.

Fasching (Germany’s carnival season) culminates on Fat Tuesday. Highlights include parades, fairs and masked balls. Some other festivals to note are Strong Beer Season in April — perfect for the beer enthusiast; the founder’s festival — celebrating Munich’s birthday in June; the Munich Film Festival in July with international films and world premieres; and the Christmas Market — full of original, beautifully handcrafted items from the area’s talented artists.

Dining & Drinks

Get a real taste of Munich’s cuisine, authentic beer and wine. Generous portions, an elegant atmosphere and reasonable prices will grace your table at most local restaurants. Along with traditional German fare, many international restaurants can be found throughout the city. Viktualienmarkt, the city’s open-air food market, sells everything from cheese and sausages to flowers and wine. It’s a great place to eat a stand-up lunch at any of the many food stalls, or to grab the makings of an unbelievable picnic.

Getting to Munich

Families can enjoy watching planes take off and land or play a round of minigolf at the Adventure Playground, which also has plenty of play space for the kids.
