The Stockholm region is home to three of Sweden’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visiting the Woodland Cemetery, Birka or Brittingham is like traveling back in time to three periods in Sweden’s history.

The Woodland Cemetery stands out for its serene surroundings and beautiful architecture by Gunnar Asplund, and offers a unique location for a quiet walk.

Birka is a Viking outpost dating back to 750 AD. This archeological site is where you can discover everything about the legendary Nordic seafarers. The dig site and museum are just a two-hour boat ride away along the sparkling waters of Lake Malaren.

Drottningholm Palace is easily one of Stockholm’s most popular tourist attractions all year round. The palace has been home to the Royal family since 1662 and houses a 300-year-old theater, The Chinese Pavilion and a magnificent castle park.

If you have time, check out two popular attractions, ABBA The Museum or the Vasamuseet (Vasa Museum). Feel like venturing outside to enjoy nature? Kayak the picturesque Stockholm Archipelago, a stone’s throw from the city center, or take in historic farms and houses, a zoo and aquarium at Skansen, Stockholm’s famous open-air museum and zoological park.

From traditional köttbullar (meatballs) to new-Nordic cuisine, Stockholm has a booming food scene that combines tradition and innovation. Experience Fika, the Swedish way of taking a coffee break together with a piece of cake or pastry, like the popular cinnamon buns. Don't miss trying scrumptious blueberry buns at Fabrique Klarabergsgatan, a local chain of traditional wood-fired bakeries in central Stockholm.

Recommended restaurants for traditional Swedish dishes include the Dan Gyldene Freden Restaurant, located in a medieval basement in Old Town. The menu offers big names in Scandinavian cooking. The Kvarnen Bar in Sodermalm is a legendary waterhole with classic Nordic fare. Meatballs for the People Restaurant serves up the classic Swedish meatball in 14 variations.

Getting to Stockholm
